Site criteria

Australian Acoustic Observatory site selection is based on several criteria.

Firstly, it is necessary that there is a wide geographical spread of locations across the continent. This spread ensures that there is a broad representative distribution of sites within the seven major ecoregions.

Secondly, sites need to represent a range of habitats at a fine scale. This is particularly important for sensor establishment as their site-level positions are determined by wet and dry conditions, and linked to the associated changes in flora and fauna.

Finally, site locations are determined by the enthusiasm and goodwill of all participating groups and individuals. It is essential that equipment is deployed and maintained, and data is collected over the duration of the project. These requirements can only be met with the cooperation and support of all involved.
